Automotive glossary: What is a Thermostat?

Definition of Thermostat: A thermostat is a component, that serves for keeping a temperature within a range, that acceptable for operation. With a liquid cooling, the temperature is controlled by a thermostat. Before reaching the operational temperature, the thermostat is closed, so that the water only passes the engine and the cooling water pump. When the thermostat opens at about 185°F (85°C), the radiator is added to the cooling loop and the actual cooling function starts.
