Automotive glossary: What is a Suspension or Wheel Suspension?

Definition of Suspension: The suspensions have the task of directing the wheels in an as exact as possible way for driving. This includes the steering, the drive and the tracking of the wheels. They are part of the chassis and represent the links between the wheels of a vehicle and the frame resp. the body work, if it is self-supporting, transmitting the forces and motions. Simple rods or rod structures ("suspension arms") of aluminum or steel with two or more hinges or ball joints on their ends, depending on the requirements of steerability, are used to make steering and suspension movements possible.
