Automotive glossary: What is On Board Diagnostic? (Abbr.: OBD)

Definition of On Board Diagnostic: An installed analysis system, that either indicates the driver via an indicator and/or puts down in an error memory for later retrieval by service personnel malfunctions, especially of the engine control. Also, with defects that may entail consequential damages, possibly activates fail-safe programs. If, as an example, a loose or broken ignition cable is detected, the driver gets a failure signal and the injection for the affected cylinder is shut off, so that no unburned gasoline can damage the catalytic converter. The driver then also notes the corresponding drop of capacity.
