Automotive glossary: What is an Airbag?

Definition of Airbag: The airbag, like the seat belt, is a security component, whose function is to prevent heavy injuries in case of en accident. In a crash, the airbag is abruptly filled and inflated with a gas, and thus serves to avoid strong impacts to the head or other body parts with hard surfaces or edges. Typically installed in the steering wheel, it is to avoid or mitigate injuries of the drivers head and face, but is also used at the side, at the front of the co-drivers seat and at other locations.
